This Season's Flavors

When the autumn air is filled with the crisp scent of the changing season, the chill in the evening air is the perfect time to turn to fall cocktails that will warm you up. Pumpkin, apple, and a variety of spice flavors can be combined with brown spirits, cider, or hot cocoa to create cocktails that will pair perfectly with sweaters, football, and fireside celebrations.

Brown spirits tend to take center stage in the fall. Rum, bourbon, whiskey, and cognac are enjoyed on their own or as favored base ingredients for cocktails. However, whether developing seasonal cocktail menus for on-premise or recommending spirits to recommend to off-premise customers, don’t forget that this is the perfect time to introduce bitter liqueurs to traditional fall flavors. While many European countries have long appreciated bitter flavor profiles, the trend away from sweet, toward bitter, is becoming popular in the United States and is expected to continue to grow.

As consumers increasingly want to replicate their favorite cocktails at home, the sales of Ready-to-Drink (RTD) cocktails are rapidly growing. Look for fall-inspired RTD cocktail flavors to use pair with restaurant curbside pick-up menus or to showcase on store shelves.

Right now, bigger is better. According to Neilsen, “many consumers are trading up to larger pack sizes in their off-premise purchases. For wine and spirits in particular, there has been unprecedented demand for larger pack sizes far beyond the norm. Comparing the year ended Feb. 29 to the seven-week COVID-19 impacted period ended April 18, sales growth in percentage points was nearly 10X higher for boxed wine and 23X higher for 1.75-litre spirits.”

Whether serving spirits on ice or as warm toddies, pre-made or from scratch, large formats or small, fill your autumn offerings with a variety of fall-friendly flavors!
