Red Blend

The second most popular red wine varietal sold in the United States, these blends pair with a wide variety of foods.

California Red Blends

Blends tend to be more consistent wines, allowing winemakers to create and maintain a house style of wine year to year. Some of the iconic red blends might be seen as more similar to Cognac or Champagne.

Emerging & Aromatic Wines

Red blends are a popular new, emerging category on the U.S. market. Ironically the bulk of the best European wines—from Bordeaux to Portugal’s Douro Valley—have long been a blend.

About Red Blends

Blending a variety of different grapes from year to year allows local winemakers to pick and choose among vineyards and growers—if they purchase fruit—and focus on what they think is the most promising mix from year to year.

The American market has been less than enthusiastic about blends as stateside consumers and producers have focused on a wine’s varietal composition. In order to be labeled a “Cabernet Sauvignon,” the wine in question must be 75 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. This long-trusted labeling law has become an assurance for many producers and their customers. That percentage jumps to 85 percent if the label lists a specific American Viticultural Area (AVA) such as Napa Valley.
