Mulled wine is a traditional holiday drink that combines red wine with spices, citrus, and a touch of sweetness. It's perfect for bringing a cozy and aromatic atmosphere to your holiday celebrations.

 

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle of red wine
  • 1/4 cup brandy (optional)
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup (adjust to taste)
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 4-6 whole cloves
  • 2 star anise
  • 1-2 apples, cored and sliced
  • Orange or lemon zest for garnish
  • Additional honey or sugar (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • Optional: a pinch of nutmeg or allspice

 

 

Directions

In a large pot, combine the red wine, brandy (if using), honey or maple syrup, sliced orange, sliced lemon, cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, star anise, and apple slices.

 

Heat the mixture over medium heat, being careful not to bring it to a boil. Let it gently simmer to allow the flavors to meld. Avoid boiling to preserve the alcohol content.

 

Reduce the heat to low and let the mulled wine simmer for at least 15-20 minutes. The longer it simmers, the more infused the flavors will be.

 

Taste the mulled wine and adjust the sweetness with additional honey or sugar if needed.

 

Before serving, strain the mulled wine to remove the spices and fruit slices. This ensures a smooth and aromatic drink.

 

Pour the mulled wine into mugs or heatproof glasses. Garnish with a twist of orange or lemon zest for a burst of citrus aroma.
