The Rioja region is arguably the best-known wine-producing region in Spain.
About La Rioja
The region is well-known for major red wines made of Tempranillo and Garnacha, among others, and while white grapes are planted here, the area is much better known for its reds.
It is divided into three regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Baja, and Rioja Alavesa. The area’s top-planted grape is the classic Tempranillo. Most wines made here are blends and the Garnacha grape is usually part of the mix. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, which arrived in the region in the 19th century, are also used in blends.
